Big Day Birdathon

Straits Area Audubon

Wednesday, May 15, 2019.

At 6:07 a.m. in the rain and a temperature of 48 degrees, 5 members of the Straits Area Audubon Society and 1 member of the Petoskey Audubon Society left the Mackinaw City Welcome Center to look for birds.

This was our biggest fundraiser of the year and we wanted to find as many bird species as we could. Led by Steve Baker and Ed Pike we visited many sites…motels, airport, tree nursery, Dingman Marsh, 2 golf courses, 2 sewage ponds, 4 inland lakes and two great lakes.

We ate lunch at the Mackinac Straits Raptor Watch site with counter Kevin Georg and at the end of the day his birds were added to our list.

Calling it a day at 5:20 p.m. we looked for birds on the way home and also at feeders. After traveling 169 miles we ended up with 113 species.

For a complete list of the species please see Ed’s list below. For those who pledged money for this event, we thank you and ask that you please mail your check made out to Straits Area Audubon Society, c/o Dale Landes, 1340 Crist Isle Drive, Cheboygan, Michigan 49721.

For those who did not donate, there is still time to do so. Each and every amount would be appreciated.

Thanks to Steve and Ed for their valued time, effort and leadership. Participants were Steve Baker, Ed Pike, Jack and Bev Kirby, Janet Trudeau and Tracy Datlen.
